Bio

Driving for Peaches formed in late 2019 in Portland, Oregon, when three new friends from faraway places - Dutch vocalist Ditte Kuijpers, and guitarists Pete Harrington from the U.K. and Alex Whitcher from New Zealand - started jamming together.
Socially-distanced sessions followed (there was a pandemic, blessedly uninformed reader of the future), which produced the band’s first songs, Head Straight, Blisters, and Salt.
The band returned to the studio in December 2021 &nbsp;accompanied by Portland musician Ian Kelley on drums, this time out of the basement and into Portland’s Sisterly Silence to lay down five tracks for their second E.P., Circles.
April 2021 saw Alex depart the US and fly home to New Zealand , which left Driving for Peaches as a songwriting duo of Ditte and Pete, who continued to jam, write and record new songs, the first of which, Firework, launches September 30th.

Portland, Oregon - New Portland-based alternative rock band, Driving for Peaches today digitally-released Salt, the group's debut song.
Salt is the first of three songs set to release this fall, which the band recorded at home in early 2020 while under COVID restrictions in Portland, Oregon.
Talking about Salt, guitarist Pete Harrington said: "We couldn't go anywhere when we wrote the track, so we started dreaming of going to the coast, which turned into the thought of first love, meeting someone and the desperation to make it work, be understood and all the crazy stuff that happens along the way. And that's really what Salt is all about."

And then COVID hit.
With live venues shut and the search for new musicians put on hold, the trio decided to try to record their ideas in Harrington's basement home studio, starting a series of socially-distanced sessions that produced the songs Head Straight, Blisters, and Salt. Keen to complete the recordings, the trio called up UK session drummer, Danyal Ince, who sent in beats from abroad. Bass proved trickier, but with other options exhausted, Harrington borrowed an old Fender four-string from Kuijpers to complete the tracks. Finally, the songs were sent off to the UK's Chris Brown (Radiohead, Muse, The Beatles), &nbsp;former Senior Engineer at Abbey Road Studios, for mixing and mastering.

Driving for Peaches Release Their New Song, ’Firework’
Sep 30th, 2021

Portland, Oregon - &nbsp;Firework, the first of three new songs set to emerge from their NE Portland basement this fall, is the latest single from indie pop/rock band, Driving for Peaches.
“Sometimes you experience something, and it reminds you of what seems like another life,” said Peaches guitarist and co-songwriter Pete Harrington. “Firework is about a relationship, when distance has given perspective and time has smoothed the edges of even the most difficult moments, leaving only a feeling of nostalgia for something that will never come again.”
Written during the band’s weekly porch rehearsals and recorded in Harrington’s basement, Firework sees singer and co-songwriter Ditte Kuijpers delivering a characteristically strong vocal performance, complemented by catchy harmonies that take flight as the song reaches its energetic climax.
Interestingly, the band reached out to Latin Grammy-nominated engineer and producer Mara Elisa Ayerbe to mix Firework, a decision Pete says had a lot to do with taking a fresh look at the recording process. “Like many other sectors, the music industry is male-dominated, so we tried to look for other options. I was watching some mixing tutorials on YouTube one day, and Maria popped up. And well, she’s incredible. Just an amazing mix engineer and person. And she wanted to work with us because she loved Ditte’s vocals - so that was a done deal.”

Five Tracks of Forever:&nbsp;Driving for Peaches Release ‘Circles’
March 17th, 2021

<img width="1000" height="1000" width_o="1000" height_o="1000" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/e236f8955db23d73a7b57d0ad0ee0353458db9bb2d5c15adf9ee270193b78d2c/BIG-circle-FINAL.jpg" data-mid="102372595" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/e236f8955db23d73a7b57d0ad0ee0353458db9bb2d5c15adf9ee270193b78d2c/BIG-circle-FINAL.jpg" />

Portland, Oregon - Loops of confusion, blurred lines and bending realities - Driving for Peaches tuned into the energy of 2020 to write Circles, a 5-track EP recorded at Portland’s Sisterly Silence Studios during December 2020.
“We wanted to recognize the strangeness of the life in the past year, living through a pandemic where every day become like the next, where it felt like one thought could transcend past, present, future, fantasy or reality,” explained Peaches singer Ditte Kuijpers. “And in each song, we tried to blend streams of consciousness with snippets of stories and several meanings to try to exorcise our feelings.”
Kicking off with the Pixies-influenced Subterfuge, the EP quickly changes gear with the slow and climatic Television before switching moods again through an almost happy Better Late Than Never, Nico-esque Every Story, before closing back where it started with the muscular rock of My Love.
“The songs seemed to sit best in that order,” said Peaches guitarist Peter Harrington. “And even though they all have a certain mood, together say something about the past year and the time we spent together writing them, even at a distance.”
Circles hits streaming and download services the week commencing March 15th.

Road Trip-Ready: Driving for Peaches Releases Head Straight

Portland, Oregon - Following on from September's release of their debut song Salt, Portland's newest band, Driving for Peaches today digitally-released Head Straight.
The second of three songs recorded earlier this year while under COVID restrictions,&nbsp;Head Straight offers a counterpoint to the alt-pop vibes of Salt, and sees the band exploring a more hard-hitting sound, with forceful, overdriven guitars and catchy single note melodies.
Talking about Head Straight, guitarist Alex Whitcher said: "The track came about through several jam sessions quickly phone-recorded, then stitched together to see what worked. The main verse guitar riff underpins the whole song, and creates this sort of 70s feeling that develops and takes off at the end into a little boogie. It’s a great track to drive to!"
